Learn how to make exercise a daily habit and not a daily chore.

How to Make Exercise a Priority and Find the Time

Step One: Make Exercise a Priority

Take a look at the priorities that drive your calendar. Put exercise at the top of your priority list, next to paying the bills and going to work. If exercise is the number three priority on my list of things to do that day and twentieth on yours, it is a safe bet I'm going to exercise and you aren't.

Where people run into trouble is making exercising a priority, but failing to make the tasks required to get there a priority. If you want to reach the top of the stairs, you first must negotiate each step.

Step Two: Find the Time

Waiting for exercise to fit into your life is like waiting to win the lottery when you haven't purchased a ticket. You need to find the time to exercise. Here's a great tip: For a week, write down where you've spent your time, as if minutes are checks that you are entering into your checkbook register. This will give you a pretty good idea of how you are spending your day.

The reality is that there are probably many points of your day that can be nipped and shaved to free up some time. If you can't free up 30 minutes a day by this method, then wipe your schedule clean, look at your priority list, and highlight the activities that are the most important (including exercise). Then let the rest of your life run around those immovable time commitments.

Steps 3 & 4: Assign a Time and Do It
